Newborn Care Specialist & Postpartum Doula

Frequently Asked Questions

A newborn care specialist is an individual trained and skilled in newborn care. They are experts who know the ins and outs of newborn development and provide unique expertise in all aspects of newborn care, parental education, and support. Their job is to nurture and care for newborn while providing guidance and education for parents. You'll have peace of mind and confidence in your baby's wellbeing and feel empowered to care for your baby confidently.

My Newborn Care Specialist rate starts at $35 / hour.

The goal of a postpartum doula is to provide parents with the opportunity to rest and recharge. They can assist with basic baby care, encourage parent-baby bonding, light home care, sibling care, and light meal prep. A postpartum doula educates clients about perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and offer support and resources for mental health care. Postpartum doulas are also great local resources for parenting classes, pediatricians, lactation support, and support groups.

The caregiver arrives between 7 - 10 pm and remain through the night, working flexible 8 - 12 hour shifts. They cultivate healthy sleep patterns, attentively attending to baby's needs, including feeding, changing, burping and soothing back to sleep. There's a minimum requirement of 8 hour shifts for nights.

  • Feeding via bottle or bringing baby to breastfeeding parent
  • Sterilizing, cleaning, and prepping bottles
  • Sterilizing and cleaning pump parts
  • Changing baby's diaper
  • Establishing healthy sleep patterns
  • Soothing baby back to sleep
  • Maintaining sleep schedules and logs
  • Keeping nursery tidy and stocked
  • Educating parents on newborn care, safety, and development

Each contract can be personalized to the needs and preferences of your family.

The caregiver will bring the baby to you for feeding. Once the feed is complete, the caregiver will change, burp, and settle the baby back to sleep. All of this typically takes up to 45 minutes. Newborns typically can't go more than 3 - 4 hours between feeds throughout the night.

Like the overnight shift, the caregiver supports feeding and soothing the baby, as well as educating parents. They help to establish daytime routines by creating a regular feeding and sleeping schedule based on their knowledge of newborn development and their ability to recognize behavior patterns and cues linked to feeding and sleep. Caregivers use gentle sleep conditioning to create healthy sleep habits. There's a minimum requirement of 4 hour shifts for days.

A bed or couch must be provided for the caregiver to rest on during the night while taking care of the baby.
